чего-то добиваться. Депрессии часто носят сезонный характер и начинаются осенью и зимой. В прошлом, когда люди полностью зависели от природных условий, это могло быть удобной стратегией для того, чтобы пережить месяцы холода, темноты и недостатка пищи.

Рэндольф Несси отмечает, что снижение активности, замирание и подавленность – частая реакция животных на стрессовые условия. Например, так себя ведут брошенные детеныши обезьян, чтобы привлечь помощь.

Кроме того, в животном мире пассивность и подавленность проявляют особи, занимающие низшие ступени в иерархии или проигравшие в борьбе за лидерство. Так они не тратят силы на борьбу, которая в их положении бессмысленна, и показывают вожаку, что они не опасны. С этой точки зрения можно объяснить депрессии, вызванные снижением социального статуса, неудачей в делах или отношениях.

Несси пишет о том, что для выживания полезно умеренно сниженное настроение. В случае с тяжелой депрессией негативные последствия перевешивают пользу. Ее можно рассматривать как побочный эффект способности снижать активность в трудных условиях.

«Естественный отбор не формирует психические расстройства, он формирует черты, которые делают нас уязвимыми к ним», – заключает Несси.
